About the Artisan

Hi, I’m Maddie Kirlin — candle maker, mom, survivor, accidental alchemist of all things pure and simple, and the proud founder of Bee American Candle Co. Thank you for taking the time to check out my website and to learn a little bit more about me and my company. I am so thankful for your support and interest. Sending positivity and blessings to you.

    My Story

My journey into candle making wasn’t planned. After surviving domestic abuse and undergoing a craniotomy in 2017, I was left navigating neurological issues and PTSD. I needed something calming, something healing — and oddly enough, that “something” turned out to be wax. Candle making became my peaceful escape, the one craft I could do that didn’t add stress or pain. Healing wasn't linear, but in the quiet act of melting wax and pouring candles, I found hope and I found strength. It became more than a hobby - it became a lifeline.

My daughter, who has multiple allergies and hypersensitivities, became my guiding star. I wanted to create things that would never harm her or me.  Turns out, I had allergies too. That path led me to lots of research and alternatives to our allergens which include pure, natural ingredients not just in candles but lotions, soaps and other body products. So now, everything I make is unscented, no artificial coloring, and free of anything questionable — for her, for me, and for anyone who needs to breathe easy when it comes to what they inhale or put on their bodies.

At Bee American Candle Co, I use 100% pure USA beeswax and bayberry wax, with every component — from wax to wick to packaging — sourced right here in the USA. I am proud to support other American makers and suppliers in every step of my process. All packaging is compostable or recyclable, because loving our country also means caring for its land.

When I’m not pouring candles in my workshop, you’ll often find me with the Village Artisans, doing historical demonstrations at our local heritage village in Dallas, NC. I melt beeswax in a cast iron cauldron over an open fire and hand-dip candles just like they did in the 1890s — sharing the story of our community’s past, one flickering flame at a time.

I’m proud to Bee American, and proud to carry on both a tradition and a mission: to create clean, beautiful candles that feel good, smell amazing, and honor the spirit of resilience and craftsmanship.

So go ahead — light one. Breathe deep. Feel the glow. And thank you for supporting something made with intention, hope and a whole lot of heart.
